Workshop on Enhancing Academic Advising for Student Success

 

 

Muscat, Oman — The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS) - Muscat recently hosted an engaging workshop aimed at improving academic advising across its various branches. Held on November 28, 2024 (Thursday), the workshop began with opening remarks from Dr. Ahmed Al-Mamari, Assistant Vice-Chancellor of UTAS-Muscat, who underscored the vital role academic advising plays in fostering student success. 

Following Dr. Al-Mamari's opening, Dr. Khalid Salim Al-Abri, Deputy of the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs (DAVCAA), outlined the workshop's goals and shared valuable insights on academic advising, emphasizing the significance of empowering students. 

The agenda featured a range of essential topics, including the presentation of effective advising models and tools from different UTAS branches, the identification of common challenges in academic advising, and discussions on practical solutions. Participants engaged in exploring best practices for academic advising, strategies to support the academic progress of students on probation, and the use of self-advising tools and resources. 

Presenters from various UTAS branches showcased their unique approaches to academic advising through informative sessions: 

  • “Insights on Self-Advising” by Mr. Mohammed Shakir (UTAS Head Office) 

  • "Auto CGPA Calculation" by Dr. Abdul Gafoor Shaik (UTAS-Muscat) 

  • "Good Practices in Academic Advising at UTAS-Ibra" by Ms. Syed Amma Sheik (UTAS-Ibra) 

  • "Effective Academic Advising Practices at UTAS-Rustaq" by Ms. Munira Al Siyabi (UTAS-Rustaq) 

  • "Enhancing Student Success: Best Practices in Advising and Monitoring Probationary Students at UTAS-Shinas" by Dr. Sibi John (UTAS-Shinas) 

  • "From Challenges to Success: Improving the Advising Experience" by Ms. Saba Naqvi (UTAS-Sur) 

  • "Monitoring Progress for On-Probation Students" by Ms. Aaisha Al-Shibli (UTAS-Suhar) 

  • "Academic Advising Practices at UTAS-Nizwa" by Ms. Zuwaina Al-Riyami (UTAS-Nizwa) 

  • "Best Practices in CIMS Counseling" by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Bayar (UTAS-Muscat) 

  • "Establishment of the Academic Student Support Office" by Dr. Khalid Salim Al-Abri (DAVCAA-Muscat) 

  • "Strategies to Enhance Students’ Academic Progress" by Ms. Nawal Al-Battashi (UTAS-Muscat) 

The workshop concluded with an open discussion, allowing participants to reflect on the shared experiences and insights. The session wrapped up with the presentation of certificates to the presenters, registrars, and organizers, acknowledging their contributions to the event's success. 

Facilitated by Ms. Nawal Al-Battashi, Preparatory Studies Centre Lecturer, the workshop not only promoted collaboration among UTAS branches but also paved the way for the implementation of innovative advising strategies aimed at significantly improving student outcomes. 

Dr. Khalid Al-Abri, the DAVCAA, expressed his appreciation to all participants and reaffirmed the university's dedication to enhancing academic advising practices, ensuring that every student receives the necessary support for their academic achievement
