Hands-on Simulation of Water Hammer Effects Using Simscape

The Professional Development Committee (PDC) of the Engineering Department, UTAS–Nizwa, organized a workshop titled “Hands-on Simulation of Water Hammer Effects Using Simscape” on 12 May 2026. The session was delivered by Dr. Murali.N, Lecturer in the Department of Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology, UTAS–Nizwa. The workshop began with a welcome address by Dr.Sabareesan, HoU of M&I section, UTAS-Nizwa.

In the realm of fluid dynamics, water hammer is a critical phenomenon that can cause significant damage in piping systems. Utilizing Simscape, a tool within MATLAB, staff engaged in hands-on simulations that vividly demonstrate the causes and effects of water hammer. This intuitive platform allows users to model and analyze complex hydraulic systems, providing insights into pressure surges caused by rapid valve closures or sudden pump startups. By altering parameters and observing variations in pressure and flow, for better understanding the mechanics behind water hammer effect. This simulation learning tool not only enhances theoretical knowledge but also equips staff with practical skills in designing robust piping systems, ultimately leading to safer and more reliable infrastructure.

Participants gained valuable insights into the use of Matlab software for Water Hammer Effects Using Simscape. The session concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mr. Prashant, a member of the Engineering PDC team.
