With the return of in-person activities, the risk, health and safety (RHS) committee looks back to the various activities done, or participated with, during Semester 1 of 2022.

Focusing on women staff and students

The Department of Fashion Design in collaboration with the RHS committee organized a seminar on empowering feminine energy last December 15.  This empowering seminar was facilitated by Ms. Jana Osta, a motivational speaker regularly providing online motivational seminars during the height of Covid-19 pandemic for UTAS staff.

Responder trainings

A series of first aid and warden responder trainings were conducted last December 05, 07-08 for staff and students.

The training certification for both first aid and warden were conducted by Samara Training Institute to provide the necessary skills for all responders of all departments.

Student-centered trainings and seminars

Ms. Sana Deshmukh organized a training for students on risk management last December 15. The seminar was geared to encouraging more student engagement, and inviting more students to join the student RHS group.

The Mechanical and Industrial Section of the Department of Engineering through Ms. Buthaina Al-Aisari, organized a seminar for providing free student membership for the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM) last November 07.  IIRSM is one of the leading professional bodies in risk management, and students interested in health and safety can certainly benefit from this membership.

Both activities were facilitated by Samara Training Institute.

An orientation to becoming a member of the student RHS group was also conducted in December.

Collaboration and community outreach

The RHS committee in coordination and collaboration with the Administration, Department of Engineering and Department of Applied Sciences, was invited to two activities outside the campus.

Last December 20, Mr. Azzan Al-Balushi together with four student responders - Khalid Issa Al Balushi, Taima Saleh Al Asmi, Aisha Mohammed Al Aysri, and Rawan Said Al Maawli - demonstrated fire safety in a forum and exhibition on health and safety organized by Arwa Bint Abdul Muttalib School in Bousher.  The committee participation was made possible through the Office of the Dean and the Department of Applied Sciences.

Ms. Sana Deshmukh presented safety driving during Oman Cables’ Sustainability Day last December 18 in Seeb.  The committee participation was made possible due to the collaborative partnership of Oman Cables and the Department of Engineering.  Mr. Nasser Al-Touqi, the focal contact with Oman Cables, Mr. Mike Medina and Mr. Azzan Al-Balushi also attended the event.

Staff RHS orientation

A series of RHS orientation for staff and contractors were conducted last September 14-15, 21 and October 06.  Majority of the department staff attended their scheduled orientation with the exception of most administrative staff and ELC.

Facilitators of the trainings were Mr. Dindo Latonio (English), Ms. Sana Deskmush (Hindi/English) and Mr. Azzan Al-Balushi (Arabic)

Staff and student development through online webinars, conferences and trainings
