Preparatory Studies Centre - Talk on Cancer Awareness

Ms. Heidi arranged for a talk on Cancer Awareness with the Oman Cancer Association on18 October 2023, in the Preparatory Studies Centre MPH. This topic is an extension of the level 3 unit on Healthy Lives in the Listening and Speaking textbook. The aim was to heighten students’ awareness of Cancer particularly in Oman.

The guest speaker, Dr. Ijlaal, gave a brief overview of what the OCA does in Oman as well as the work of Dar Al Hanan – a place that offers accommodation, meals and support to the families of cancer patients residing outside Muscat.

Dr. Ijlaal informed the students and lecturers present about the types of cancer, their clinical names, stages and degrees of cancer, how to detect and prevent cancer, also the types of treatments available. She called on students to volunteer their time at Dar Al Hanan, a noble cause.

She went on to talk about the Annual Walkathon, being held on 3 November this year, at Qurum Park. The main aim of this event is to raise funds for the OCA in its pursuit to educate everyone in Oman about cancer.  T-shirts, caps, cancer pins and mugs are sold to promote both the OCA and the Walkathon. The walkathon will start at 16:30 and participants will walk one full loop of the park. Fun activities and Raffle Draws are held after the walk. 

After the presentation, Ms. Heidi thanked Dr. Ijlaal and Mrs. Veronica for their presentation and the certificates of Appreciation were handed to them by Ms. Omniyah.

Several students and staff bought T-Shirts outside the MPH and had a chance to interact with the two OCA representatives.
