How to Choose Your Career Path After High School

 

Apart of the external collaboration requirements, Ms. Hudham Al Mazrui, a senior HRM lecturer, from the Business Department in the University of Technology and Applied Science accepted the invitation from Myschool International School to deliver a motivational talk about the topic: “How to Choose Your Career Path After High School”. The keynote dated: 14th March 2023 was delivered for a group of 60 students from grades 9 to 12. The session was an interactive one and encouraged the students to raise up their questions and doubts. Most interestingly, the students were well informed of the challenges they can expect from the local market and had interesting ideas and passions with regards to the starting points of their careers.

The themes of the keynote focused on the following subject areas:

  • Understanding the confusion and the stressful moments that the students are facing especially when they are in their final year at high school.
  • The important practical tips that the students can execute straight away were:
    • Doing self-reflection to understand their personal needs and preferences
    • Researching the job market and identifying the common available job vacancies
    • Gaining practical experience and exposure while studying.

Finally, the session ended with many questions raised by the students. Their concerns were around the following points:

  •  Fear of taking risk and following their passion
  •  Choosing a career path while having plan B
  •  How to achieve work-life balance?
  • What makes the person happy at work?
  • The fear of choosing a career path that has less demand in the local job market
  • The confusion of starting a business or a traditional career path
