Welcome to the Centre of Preparatory Studies (CPS). If you are interested in improving your English and your study skills, the CPS is the right place for you. The CPS with its three units: English Language Curriculum and Assessment Unit (ELCAU), Mathematics and Computing Skill Curriculum and Assessment Unit (MCSCAU), and General Requirements Unit (GRU) strives to help students succeed in their academic studies and in the labour market.

The different courses in the foundation and the post-foundation levels are designed to prepare students holistically to face the challenges in the labour market. The CPS offers three forms of curriculum in the foundation level: English, Math, and Computing Skills, in addition to the general requirement courses for post-foundation students in different specialisations, such as Technical Writing, English for Academic Purposes and Public Speaking. Moreover, courses such as Entrepreneurship, Arabic Language, Oman Civilisation, Islamic Studies, Work Ethics, Critical Thinking, Design Thinking & Innovation, and Communication Skills are provided for post-foundation students. In the future, we are planning to teach languages such as Chinese, French and German.

The students’ hobbies and creative talents are also identified and enhanced in the CPS through different extracurricular activities. Foundation students are encouraged to take part in different outside-of-class activities organised by different groups in order to provide them with platforms to express their talents and ideas and to enhance their life skills.

The CPS has more than 100 lecturers from 18 different countries. Their mission is to help every student to be able to communicate effectively and to use the English language and computing skills as well as other acquired skills to succeed both personally and professionally.

Finally, I encourage all students to explore the UTAS-Ibri website, especially the CPS page to learn more about our centre and its services and activities. Our motto in the centre is “Acquire skills. Make success.”

Wishing you all the best for a wonderful journey ahead.
