This program aims to equip students with a range of knowledge and skills in the main functional areas of business. It focuses on technical knowledge and expertise with a view to a career in financial technology specialization. Graduates of this program are to acquire a variety of skills needed by both public and private institutions as well as being entrepreneurs and investors.

 

Upon completion of the program, the graduates will be able to:

Introduction to Business is an introductory level course designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge of business terminologies, concepts and business issues with the intent of helping students develop a viable business vocabulary, foster critical thinking and analytical thinking, and refine business decision-making skills.

This course examines the business function of Marketing. Students will learn how marketers deliver value in satisfying customer needs and want, determine which target markets the organization can best serve, and decide upon appropriate products, services, and programs to serve these markets. Further, the students develop a solid understanding of key concepts and terminologies of marketing and how it fits within the organization.

This course is taught during the first year of diploma-level study. It is designed to provide students with basic knowledge in economics like economic systems, economics as science and art, and positive and normative economics. It covers the aspects of both microeconomics and macroeconomics. Microeconomics includes understanding consumer and producer behavior through demand and supply analysis. The concepts are elaborated with graphs and tables. Fixing price through consumer equilibrium is elaborated with graphs and tables. Shits in Price and quality equilibrium with the effect of determinants of demand and supply is explained through the Shits in Demand and Supply curve. Macroeconomics includes various variables related to National Income, GDP, GNP, NDP, NNP, PI and PDI. It also covers the Functioning of Money and Banking by including the Supply and Demand of money and explains banking and its functions. It also explains the concept of Fiscal and Monetary policy in relation to the national budget process. The explanation includes Government Revenue and Capital receipts. Finally, the course provides students with an understanding of the economy and budget process within the Omani context.

This course in Principles of Accounting (1) is an introduction to the basic accounting concepts and selected accounting practices and to introduce students to the role of, and the processes involved in planning and decision making within the business environment. This course focuses on the accounting cycle, journal entries related to sales, purchases, collection, payments and expenses, posting, trial balance and preparation of basic financial statements – the balance sheet and income statement.

A supply chain is comprised of all the parties involved in fulfilling a customer’s request. The integrated management of this network is a critical determinant of success in today’s competitive environment. With increasing competition around the globe, supply chain and logistics management is both a challenge and an opportunity for companies. Hence a strong understanding of supply chain management concepts and the ability to recommend improvements should be in the toolbox of all managers. This course includes the major supply chain processes including the importance of supply chain and logistics, Purchasing and Procurement, Demand and Inventory management, Aggregate Planning, Warehousing as well Transportation and Distribution. The essentials of e-logistics and how technology drives the logistics sector are given importance in this course. In addition to that, areas for improvement in logistics and supply chain operations as well as the contemporary issues faced by the modern days’ supply chains at local, regional and global levels included.

This course is offered to students during the second semester of diploma level. The course aims to teach students how to address business using management processes and functions. It teaches the fundamentals of management, including planning, organizing, directing and controlling processes. In addition, it provides students with an understanding of various managerial skills and roles required in the organization. Furthermore, it assists students in carrying and decision making and the steps to take in order to design the organization structure. Besides, the course describes the different aspects of organisational culture and learn about motivational theories. Additionally, it focuses on learning varied leadership styles which can be applied in the real business world. Along with that, it provides an understanding of different communication, types, processes and barriers that may hinder effective communication.

It is giving rise to rapid changes in the way we make, manage, interact with, and even define, money. And while this can mean uncertainty and upheaval for incumbents, it presents a world of possibility for those able to innovate and adapt. The course will provide a broad overview of the FinTech industry and lay the groundwork for students to analyze and identify opportunities in this emerging sector.

Financial Management (I) is an introductory level course designed to provide students with fundamental knowledge and understanding of financial management function and its environment and the major financial decisions within organizations with specific attention to working capital management, capital budgeting and financing decisions. This course will also cover the basic framework of the financial system including macroeconomic policy, financial markets, banks and financial institutions.

The focus of this course is to develop provides an introduction to financial markets and financial institutions. The module focuses first on understanding financial markets and introduces students to key asset classes (stocks, bonds). Topics may include the role and behaviour of interest rates, risk and the term structure, the theory of Rational Expectations and the Efficient Market Hypothesis. The module then focuses on the role of financial institutions in the economy. Topics may include the economic analysis of financial structure, banking and the management of financial institutions, the economic analysis of financial regulation, the structure and competition within the banking industry, and financial crises.

This course provides the basic mathematical concepts and techniques used in finance and business, highlighting the inter-relationships of the mathematics and developing problem solving skills with a particular emphasis on financial and business applications. Topics covered are: polynomial, exponential and logarithmic functions; limits, sequences, interest rates and annuities; linear equations, matrices and determinants; Leontief economic models; optimisation (linear programming).

 

Semester 2

This course will give an overview of the Islamic financial system. The core principles and basic models of Islamic finance. It also establishes a framework for understanding this financial system.

This module equips you with the knowledge and tools to implement financial models using Excel. The module covers a range of topics in finance drawn from investment analysis, corporate finance, fixed income analysis, risk measurement and international finance.

This course introduction to programming aims to:

  • Develop the students’ knowledge and understanding of programming languages and programming concepts.
  • Develop the students’ ability to use programming language and write programs.
  • Develop the students’ ability to use various data types, operators and control structures.
  • Develop the students’ ability to use built-in functions and write user defined functions.
  • Develop the students’ ability to apply string handling functions.

This course will be provided during the second semester of the Diploma level as a college requirement in order to teach students how to address business challenges using statistical methods. This course teaches the fundamentals of statistics, including measurement scales and data types. In addition, students will learn to develop and understand tables and graphs to organize and present various data sets. In addition, this course covers the application of descriptive statistical methods, as well as the computation and interpretation of Simple Linear Regression and Correlation Analysis results. Furthermore, this course assists students in analyzing and applying the estimate of confidence intervals and the parts of hypothesis testing. Apply the nonparametric Chi-Square test to determine independence and goodness-of-fit, apply time series ideas to real- world data and evaluate the findings of the analysis to demonstrate your understanding. Besides, students will perform descriptive and inferential data analysis using Excel and SPSS.

 

 

 

The Advanced Diploma in Financial Technology (FinTech) is designed to prepare graduates for a career in finance with a focus in technologies. In addition to the specialized technical knowledge and skills of finance, the graduate will gain an understanding of the technologies that affect finance and financial services. The program enables graduates to enrich their practical skills and problem solving in the evolving nature of FinTech.

This course is a pre-requisite for graduation project A. The course is taught in the first semester of the advanced diploma level. It provides students with a clear understanding of the process of social science research. Students gain hands-on experience in: identifying research gaps and problems; analyzing literature review critically and formulating research aims and objectives. The course explains the process of designing a thorough research methodology by teaching students: how to create a data collection instrument/method; which research type and design to adopt, and what type of sampling technique to be used to identify the targeted research respondents/participants and how to analyze data by using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The course also aims to familiarize students with the significance of research ethics and integrity. Moreover, it provides students with an understanding of how to link their research findings with the arguments from relevant empirical research studies; and how to show the contribution of their research study to the existing knowledge.

Financial Innovations in Markets and Technologies is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the major areas of financial innovations such as future of money, economy, financial marketplaces blockchain, cryptocurrency, payment infrastructures, digital economy and green finance.

This course provides advanced programming concepts and techniques for financial applications using high level programming language.

Electronic Payment Systems and Security is designed to provide Fintech students with in-depth knowledge of covers banking systems, e-payment security, foreign exchange, Internet banking, wireless payments, stored-value cards, micropayments, peer-to-peer payments, electronic and virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, large-scale B2B payments and the future of money.

This course aims to introduce students to theoretical and empirical quantitative methods including develop and estimate economic model as well as interpret, evaluate and communicate the economic model results.

The focus of this course is to develop an understanding of the markets for foreign exchange and the financial management of multinational companies. The module will provide an introduction to the main theoretical models used to understand foreign exchange markets as well as an in-depth analysis of how these markets work in practice. The module examines different models of exchange rate determination together with the reasons for variation in exchange rates. It also analyses the international financial environment and how it affects the companies operating within this environment. It considers the risk exposure for companies and investors arising from the exchange rate volatility and techniques to manage foreign exchange risks. Finally, some sessions will be delivered by professional traders to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how foreign exchange markets work in the real world and how to use different trading techniques to analyze and trade in foreign exchange.

This course aims to:

Financial Management (2) is an intermediate to an advanced level course designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the major decision-making areas of managerial finance such as cost of capital, capital structure and financing, business valuations, dividend policy, and forecasting and risk management

The focus of this course is to develop an understanding of rapidly evolving technologies have brought huge disruptions to their digital platforms. The insurance industry is embracing digital transformation in various ways to mitigate complex challenges it is facing from consumers, regulatory and digital landscapes. Traditional insurance offerings are not able to meet the needs of policyholders involved with businesses that have new business and operating models.

This course will be provided during the second semester of the Diploma level as a college requirement in order to teach students how to address business challenges using statistical methods. This course teaches the fundamentals of statistics, including measurement scales and data types. In addition, students will learn to develop and understand tables and graphs to organize and present various data sets. In addition, this course covers the application of descriptive statistical methods, as well as the computation and interpretation of Simple Linear Regression and Correlation Analysis results. Furthermore, this course assists students in analyzing and applying the estimate of confidence intervals and the parts of hypothesis testing. Apply the nonparametric Chi-Square test to determine independence and goodness-of-fit, apply time series ideas to real- world data and evaluate the findings of the analysis to demonstrate your understanding. Besides, students will perform descriptive and inferential data analysis using Excel and SPSS.

 

 

Semester 1

This course is a pre-requisite for graduation project A. The course is taught in the first semester of the advanced diploma level. It provides students with a clear understanding of the process of social science research. Students gain hands-on experience in: identifying research gaps and problems; analyzing literature review critically and formulating research aims and objectives. The course explains the process of designing a thorough research methodology by teaching students: how to create a data collection instrument/method; which research type and design to adopt, and what type of sampling technique to be used to identify the targeted research respondents/participants and how to analyze data by using both quantitative and qualitative techniques. The course also aims to familiarize students with the significance of research ethics and integrity. Moreover, it provides students with an understanding of how to link their research findings with the arguments from relevant empirical research studies; and how to show the contribution of their research study to the existing knowledge.

Financial Innovations in Markets and Technologies is designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the major areas of financial innovations such as future of money, economy, financial marketplaces blockchain, cryptocurrency, payment infrastructures, digital economy and green finance.

This course provides advanced programming concepts and techniques for financial applications using high level programming language.

Electronic Payment Systems and Security is designed to provide Fintech students with in-depth knowledge of covers banking systems, e-payment security, foreign exchange, Internet banking, wireless payments, stored-value cards, micropayments, peer-to-peer payments, electronic and virtual currencies such as Bitcoin, large-scale B2B payments and the future of money.

 

Semester 2

This course aims to introduce students to theoretical and empirical quantitative methods including develop and estimate economic model as well as interpret, evaluate and communicate the economic model results.

The focus of this course is to develop an understanding of the markets for foreign exchange and the financial management of multinational companies. The module will provide an introduction to the main theoretical models used to understand foreign exchange markets as well as an in-depth analysis of how these markets work in practice. The module examines different models of exchange rate determination together with the reasons for variation in exchange rates. It also analyses the international financial environment and how it affects the companies operating within this environment. It considers the risk exposure for companies and investors arising from the exchange rate volatility and techniques to manage foreign exchange risks. Finally, some sessions will be delivered by professional traders to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of how foreign exchange markets work in the real world and how to use different trading techniques to analyze and trade in foreign exchange.

This course aims to:

  • Develop the students’ ability of the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in the finance industry.
  • Develop the students’ competency on identifying neural networks and deep learning techniques and architectures and their applications in finance.

Financial Management (2) is an intermediate to an advanced level course designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the major decision-making areas of managerial finance such as cost of capital, capital structure and financing, business valuations, dividend policy, and forecasting and risk management

The focus of this course is to develop an understanding of rapidly evolving technologies have brought huge disruptions to their digital platforms. The insurance industry is embracing digital transformation in various ways to mitigate complex challenges it is facing from consumers, regulatory and digital landscapes. Traditional insurance offerings are not able to meet the needs of policyholders involved with businesses that have new business and operating models.

 

Semester 1

This course aims to:

  • Develop the students’ knowledge of the importance of framing big data in the financial industry.
  • Develop the students’ ability to use statistics in analyzing and solving the problems in finance.
  • Develop the students’ competency on Text analytics & Social media Analytics.
  • Develop the students’ competency on interpreting outputs from a variety of Data Analytics software tools.

The focus of this course is on the examination and valuation of the major investment vehicles and strategies used today. It provides students on how investors allocate their financial assets by forming, managing, and evaluating portfolios containing instruments such as stocks, bonds, futures and option contracts. This will help students to develop a conceptual and theoretical background upon which the student can expand their knowledge of the field of investments, the topical treatment will be rather practically oriented.

This course aims to:

  • Develop the students’ knowledge of the importance of cybersecurity in the financial system.
  • Develop the students’ ability to relate cybersecurity and digital transformation.
  • Develop the students’ competency on identifying cybersecurity threats, attacks, data breach implications, and privacy.
  • Develop the students’ competency on identifying the differences between operational and financial implications of cybersecurity.

As a college requirement, this course will be taught during the first semester of bachelor-level study. This course will provide a broad understanding of the complex environment in which organizations operate and the strategies they employ for success. Students must be able to explain the foundations of corporate strategy and strategic management. Further, students will learn to assess the environment and industry before establishing strategy, analyze the concept of competitive advantage and the competitive position of the organization, explore the various types of corporates and strategies within businesses, and assess the effect of corporate social responsibility. Moreover, the course provides an understanding of the influence of modern changes such as globalization and technological advancements on business international strategies.

Graduation Project I aims to develop research capability, in order to address specific real-life problems within the context of study of area. The course will practically expose the student to the main components of the research framework and namely problem identification, literature review, research design and ethical issues in research.

 

Semester 2

This course is designed to provide fintech students with in-depth knowledge of distributed ledger technology blockchain technology, crypto assets. This advanced level course will include important topics on digital currency, virtual currencies and cryptocurrencies, pricing and valuation of cryptocurrencies.

FinTech risk management is an advanced level course designed to provide FinTech students with the in-depth knowledge of the concept of fintech risk management, the model of assessing fintech risk management, fintech risks and the challenges associated with these risks.

The main goal of this course is to introduce the new issues in financial technology and make the students aware of future trends of the contemporary issues in fintech and their impact on the financial industry.

Graduation Project II aims to develop research capability, in order to address specific real-life problems within the context of the study of the area. This course will practically expose the student to the main components of the research framework namely data collection, analysis and interpretation of data, report writing and presentation and ethical issues in conducting the research.

Business Law is a comprehensive introduction to the legal and ethical framework of business. This course will examine court systems, obligations and contracts law, employment law, and partnership and corporation.
