Report on From Idea to Influence: Mastering the Research Journey”

The internal research workshop titled “From Idea to Influence: Mastering the Research Journey” was conducted on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, from 11:15 AM to 12:15 PM at UTAS–Nizwa (ITD), as part of the Spring semester research activities. The session was chaired by the Head of DCIS, Dr. Maha al Anqoudi and delivered by Dr. Abdulaziz Al-Nahari, an IT Lecturer at UTAS–Nizwa. Since 2024. Dr. Al-Nahari holds a PhD from University Technology Malaysia (UTM), Malaysia.
The workshop focused on guiding participants through the complete research journey from developing a research idea to successfully publishing in a suitable journal. Dr. Al-Nahari provided a comprehensive refresher on managing research papers effectively, emphasizing proper structuring of manuscripts, maintaining logical flow, and ensuring clarity in each section of a scholarly article. He discussed common mistakes researchers make during paper preparation and highlighted strategies to enhance the quality and coherence of academic writing.
A significant portion of the session was dedicated to understanding the peer-review process and developing critical skills for reviewing research papers. Participants were introduced to effective techniques for evaluating manuscripts, identifying strengths and weaknesses, and providing constructive academic feedback. The session also covered essential guidance on selecting appropriate journals for publication, stressing the importance of aligning the research scope with journal objectives, verifying indexing status, and avoiding predatory publishers.
An interactive segment of the workshop involved exploring the SCOPUS database to identify IT-related journals suitable for publication. Dr. Al-Nahari demonstrated how to search for journals, review quartile rankings, examine impact indicators, and analyze journal scope to ensure proper fit for submitted research. Sample research papers were reviewed during the session, and practical tips were shared to increase the likelihood of acceptance in reputable journals.
The workshop concluded with enhanced confidence among participants in preparing and submitting high-quality research papers. A total of 15 participants attended the session, and the feedback rating reflected an outstanding 99% satisfaction level, indicating the relevance and effectiveness of the workshop. Overall, the session was informative, practical, and highly beneficial in strengthening research capacity within UTAS-Nizwa. The session was coordinated by Dr. Sonia Soans the PDC-DCIS coordinator.
