Prevention and Mitigation of Risk Factors of Ransomware Attacks in Organizations

 

Nizwa, May 6, 2025 – The University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Nizwa, successfully conducted a specialized workshop on “Prevention and Mitigation of Risk Factors of Ransomware Attacks in Organizations” on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The event took place on campus at Room A134 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM and was organized as part of the Spring session under the theme of Cloud Security, Technology Management, and Critical Thinking for Future Skills.

The session was led by renowned Networking and E-Security expert Dr. Jehan Murugadhas, who brings over 25 years of experience in teaching and research, with a strong focus on Mobile Ad Hoc Networks and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Dr. Jehan, currently serving at UTAS - Nizwa, has trained more than 25,000 professionals globally and has been actively mentoring IoT-based innovations aimed at solving real-world challenges.

Addressing a group of UTAS Nizwa academic staff, the workshop emphasized the growing threat of ransomware and other forms of malware, shedding light on the devastating impact these attacks can have on organizational processes and data integrity. Dr. Jehan provided valuable insights into identifying vulnerabilities, implementing best practices, and developing robust risk mitigation strategies.

The workshop also explored real-world case studies and offered practical guidance on how employees can recognize early warning signs of cyberattacks, reduce organizational risk, and adopt preventive cybersecurity practices.

Dr. Jehan’s extensive expertise was evident throughout the session, as he drew on his research and project experience—including TRC-funded IoT projects like smart home systems and smart city applications. His session also emphasized the importance of awareness and training in strengthening cybersecurity culture within organizations.

The event was coordinated by Mrs. Sonia Soans from the Professional Development Committee (PDC) and forms part of UTAS Nizwa’s commitment to enhancing staff readiness and resilience in the face of emerging cyber threats.

This timely and informative workshop concluded successfully with positive feedback from participants, highlighting the need for ongoing training and awareness to stay ahead in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
