Advanced Diploma of Arts in Fashion Design

 

The Fashion Design Program in UTAS aims to provide students with a high-quality fashion education according to the global job requirements, local market needs and adapted to the local social norms. To help students learn and practice skills that are necessary for graduates to be able to integrate in the professional industry.

 

To create a bridge between the young entrepreneurs and local fashion industry professionals and be involved in professional integration of our students and graduates.

 

By completion of the program graduates will be able to:

  •  Closely monitor the production calendar to meet the deadlines for the apparel company, before fashion shows, previews of new collections and new stores openings.
  •  Work closely with the members of the design, product development, sales and planning teams, ensuring all tasks are completed by scheduled deadlines.
  •  Create fashion illustrations such as product sketches, technical drawings, and other works of art related to fashion industry using drawing and digital skills for newspapers, fashion magazines, apparel companies and designers.
  •  Select templates that are used to produce basic clothing products and translate design models into patterns using flat drawing technique.
  •  Using freehand measurement technique create basic draping elements and products in line with the design.
  •  Create unique looks for VIP personas and people who are interested in reflecting a suitable fashion image such as TV presenters, actors and executives, from head to toe by selecting trending outfits, maintain a professional relationship with apparel companies and designers by establishing a fashion network.
  •  Create digital artworks related to fashion such as posters, mood-boards, story boards, and media publications.
  •  Create fashion content that is attractive to the audience.
  •  Create patterns of clothing products, using flat drawing, and draping techniques.
  •  Monitor fittings, make sure the product, assembly, outfit is well executed and in line with the measures, conduct further alterations of the product.
  •  Follow up with the machinist and handworkers and generate production folder.

 

  •  Theoretical exam: basic knowledge of subject matter is required.
  •  Interview: assessment of student’s passion for subject matter.
  •  Completion of the Foundation Program.

 

The program was designed to prepare professionals such as Fashion Designer, Group Leader, Brand Buyer, Stylist, Pattern Drafter, Production Coordinator, Fashion Blogger, Assistant Art Director, Assistant Creative Director, Trends Forecasting Specialist, Cost Control Manager, Advanced Draping Assistant.

Semester 1

Introduction to the culture of Fashion Design, Figure drawing, Sketching and Coloring techniques, Mood-board and Textile.

Introduction to the sewing machine, and exercises on different skirts assembly. Understand the dart manipulation of the skirt base to create different volumes, cuts, and shapes by using the flat drawing technique. At the end of the course the student will be able to produce a skirt from his own fashion design skirt collection using a fabric that is familiar to her from the textile course.

Students will learn how to draw a silhuette using correct proportions, shadowing, face and body details, basics of coloring and color combinations.

Introduction to the skirt garment, its history and data base. Students learn how to create a skirt collection using “Dart Manipulation” creative approach. Students Create their first mini collections.

Introduction to the draping technique of the skirt, the fitting and how to transfer a drape into a pattern, Students learn how to present their work in front of a jury using technical words.

Students will work with a range of mediums including ink, markers, watercolours, crayons and pastels, collage, digital and mixed media, and will learn how to sketch and draw with greater confidence. You will learn how to illustrate the human body, and how to draw fashion garments and clothes.

Semester 1

Introduction to the shirt and trousers garments, minimalist art, market level, brand Identity, textiles and textures, fashion Illustration. Students create a minimalist collection of trousers and shirts using “Mute”Creative approach.

Introduction to the city trouser with all its details, from the pocket to waistband the fly and the pleats. The second part is to work with the bodice block to create shirts and blouses by flat drawing patterns, assemble the shirt different collars cuffs, sleeves, and cuts. At the end of the course the student will produce a total look of a city trouser and a shirt.

Is a supportive theoretical course that will enhance students knowledge regarding fashion culture subject. Students will learn interesting and essential facts from fashion world, as well biographies and identities of world know fashion houses and designers. Students will be able to apply their knowledge in a variety of exercises and researches, and will be able to create their fashion archives.

Semester 2

Introduction to the dress and abaya, modern architecture inspiration, or story-telling inspiration. Students design a collection of abayas and dresses using “Window” Creative Approach.

Introduction to the draping of the shirt and the enlargements of different volumes, correct the drape and produce a pattern. Students will be able to combine a shirt and a skirt to produce a dress, assemble sleeves and collars. The abaya will be the fruit of their knowledge at the end of the course.

The course will focus on fashion textiles and fabric analysis and research. The course is designed to teach the student the importance of fashion accessories, materials and fabrics choice. Students will learn history and origins of textyle, prints on textile, wowen textiles.

Introduction to the Casual Wear garments and casual wear data base and history: Perfecto, Trench Coat, Bomber, Denim Jacket. Students create a collection of Casual wear garments and sub-pieces.

Students will learn how to create casual wear products from one construction, to get used to a quicker production way during their career life. They will learn new casualwear details and finishing. Second part of course is Draping.

This course explores the social, and environmental aspects of the global fashion industry and the current tools and methodologies available to improve it. Students will learn and practice Zero waste fashion techniques, research current sustainable fashion trends and sustainable fashion brands and designers around the world.

Introduction to the tailored suit garment, and its history by decades. Students create a collection of Tailored Suits using “Dart Manipulation” Creative approach and tailored suit fabrics. Students learn the basics of couture.

Introduction to the tailored suit, with a deeper knowledge of the dart manipulation, tailored sleeve, different tailored collars, pockets, and finishing. Students will produce a total look from their fashion design collection a suit with a skirt or trouser to refresh their knowledge.

This course is an advanced diploma level material on how to create a fashion lookbook with editorial, the content and it's steps, tips about photographes and how to write an editorial about fashion

The course consists of modules, each explaining various aspects of fashion blogging. The modules begin with the basics of blogging, getting the blog up and running, and creating original and creative content, and shooting beautiful images. By the end of the course students will create their own fashion blogs.
