1. Introduction
The Department of Economics and Business Administration (UTAS-Ibra) successfully organized the New Student Induction Programme for Semester I of the Academic Year 2026-2027 on 22 September 2026. The programme was conducted in BS 102 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with the objective of welcoming newly admitted students and introducing them to the academic environment, regulations, support services, and opportunities available within the university. The induction programme served as an important platform to help new students understand the university's academic expectations, student support systems, extracurricular opportunities, quality assurance initiatives, and career development pathways.
2. Objectives of the Programme
The programme was organized with the following objectives:
- To officially welcome newly admitted students to the Department of Economics and Business Administration.
- To familiarize students with university rules, regulations, and academic bylaws.
- To introduce the academic advising and counselling services available at UTAS.
- To raise awareness about student support services and extracurricular activities.
- To provide information regarding entrepreneurship, innovation, and career development opportunities.

4. Programme Proceedings
The induction programme commenced with a welcome address delivered by Dr. Salma Said Humaid Al Naamani, Head of Business Administration Unit, who welcomed the new students and encouraged them to utilize the various academic and personal development opportunities available at UTAS.
Subsequently, Mr. Abdulla Thanseer, Department Registrar, presented an informative session on student registration procedures, college systems, and institutional bylaws. This session provided students with essential guidance regarding academic administration and compliance requirements.
A comprehensive presentation on academic advising, counselling, academic risk management, extracurricular activities, student support systems, and On-the-Job Training (OJT) was delivered by Dr. Issa Saleh Hamood AlAmri. The session highlighted the support mechanisms available to assist students throughout their academic journey.
The students were also introduced to the Business Departmental Society by Mrs. Jasmine Mariappan, who explained the role of student societies in fostering engagement, leadership, teamwork, and professional development.
An important session on student-related policies and counselling services was conducted by Mrs. Fathiya Al Salmi, Head of Counselling. The presentation emphasized student welfare, expected behavioural standards, and available counselling support.
The institution's Strategic Plan 2026-2030 and Quality Assurance initiatives were presented by Mr. Venancio B. Gabriel. Students gained insight into the university's vision, mission, strategic priorities, and commitment to continuous improvement and academic excellence.
Thereafter, Ms. Nasra Masoud Salim Al-Habsi delivered an engaging presentation on Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The session encouraged students to think creatively and explore entrepreneurial opportunities during their academic studies.
To inspire the new students, a motivational talk was presented by Ms. Tasnim Salim Al Hasani, Bachelor student (Human Resource Management). She shared her experiences and encouraged students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to their academic goals.
The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Dr. Shakeb Akhtar, who expressed appreciation to all presenters, faculty members, administrative staff, and students for their participation and contribution to the successful conduct of the programme.
5. Outcomes of the Programme
The induction programme successfully achieved its intended outcomes:
- New students gained a clear understanding of university regulations, procedures, and academic expectations.
- Students became aware of the support services available for academic, personal, and professional development.
- Awareness regarding quality assurance practices and institutional strategic goals was enhanced.
- Students were encouraged to actively participate in departmental and extracurricular activities.
