The ICESCO Chair for AI Ethics, launched at the University of Technology and Applied Science in Oman on January 16, 2024, addresses the ethical complexities of artificial intelligence within the Islamic world. Established under ICESCO (Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), headquartered in Rabat, Morocco, this initiative promotes responsible AI practices by developing ethical guidelines, advancing research, and raising awareness on ethical AI use. It emphasizes principles of fairness, transparency, and accountability, supporting both regional and global efforts in ethical AI. ICESCO, dedicated to fostering education, science, culture, and sustainable development, creates programs like this Chair to address global challenges while respecting cultural contexts across its member states.

 

Objectives

  1. Promote ethical standards in AI across academia, industry, and government.
  2. Foster international collaboration on AI ethics research and policy development.
  3. Support initiatives that ensure AI is used responsibly for societal benefit.
  4. Lead workshops, conferences, and research projects focusing on AI ethics in Islamic countries.
