Equip students with technical competency to prepare the next generation of highly skilled assistant pharmacist leaders in the pharmacy profession.  

 

The students who satisfactorily complete the Diploma in Pharmacy should be able to:

 

  1.  Apply the knowledge of pharmacology and pharmaceutical sciences across all facets of the Medication-Use Process.
  2.  Accurately and efficiently perform pharmaceutical calculations in daily work practices.
  3.  Assist the pharmacists in providing excellent and holistic patient-centered care that apply the framework of pharmaceutical care, good pharmacy practice and rational use of medicines.
  4.  Actively and effectively participate in health promotion and disease prevention activities.
  5.  Compound pharmaceutical preparations according to official Pharmacopeia standards.
  6.  Apply the principles of current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) and quality control in the workplace.
  7.  Implement store management principles, good distribution practice and inventory control of pharmaceutical products.
  8.  Meticulously record and maintain documentations of job-related activities.
  9.  Apply the principles of Pharmacy laws and ethics, code of conduct and professionalism in everyday practice.
  10.  Apply interpersonal knowledge and skills that contribute to effective collaboration and teamwork to achieve work-related goals and outcomes.
  11.  Commit to life-long learning strategies to ensure continuous professional development and maintain excellence in the profession.

Semester 1

This course introduces students to the history of pharmacy practice and stages of its development including pharmacy departments and services. Moreover, students will be able to differentiate between types of prescriptions and orders as per ministry of health roles and regulations. Students will also gain the basic skills for pharmaceutical calculations, medicine information and first aid.

This course introduces students to core concepts in pharmacology using a combination of theory lectures, problem-based learning and computer-based simulation activities. Students will gain a thorough understanding of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics principles and will be able to link them to variations in drug response, drug-receptor interactions, dose-response relationships and drug toxicity. The course also covers the pharmacology of the autonomic nervous system and autacoids, introducing students to the pharmacological actions, therapeutic uses and adverse reactions of cholinergic and adrenergic drugs as well as anti-histamines and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

This course will introduce the students to the basic medical word structure, with the meaning of common prefixes, suffixes, word roots, pharmaceutical abbreviations and dosage forms. Students will also be introduced to common medical terms used in human anatomy and its related disease. Overall, this course will lay the foundations for effective communication with patients and medical specialists.

This course will introduce pharmacy students to a general understanding of basic principles of biology, particularly the organization of life at cellular level. It contains, the general characteristics of living things, structure and functions of cells, movement of substances in and out of cells, tissues, organ systems of the human and biology of enzymes

The course introduces the basic concepts of chemistry concerning significant figures, unit cancellation method, structure of atom, number of moles, methods to express the concentration of solutions, redox reactions, laws of electrolysis and basic organic chemistry and their applications for an all-round development of the students. Practical work forms an integral part of this course.

This course is designed for students of B2+ language proficiency level. The course is aimed at enhancing students’ academic skills by exposing them to academic modes of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The course also aims at enabling students to participate in academic discussions of lectures through strategic listening and speaking and to improve their reflective writing and speaking skills through summarizing and paraphrasing various scientific and technological topics.

 

Semester 2

This course will enable students to process different types of prescriptions and verify any potential drug interactions. Students will also be able to apply the basic concepts of medication safety and provide the required pharmaceutical care for patients with gastrointestinal and respiratory system diseases.

This course will cover drugs used in the treatment of gastrointestinal, respiratory, renal system, thromboembolic and cardiovascular disorders. Emphasis will be on linking the pharmacological properties of the drugs to the pathophysiological mechanisms of the disorders using a combination of theory lectures, computer-based simulations and problem-based learning. On completion, students will be able to categorize drugs into their correct therapeutic indications and identify their adverse effects and contraindications.

This course will introduce students to pharmaceutical drug preparations, definitions, classifications, uses along with manufacturing and formulation procedures, labelling, storages and container selection and to get familiarity with the new drug delivery system. Students will also learn to perform essential calculations, preparations and dispensing of non-sterile compounding.

This course will introduce pharmacy students to the chemistry of biologically important molecules that constitute the body (carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids) and the biochemical function of sub cellular organelles with the major metabolic pathways that take place in mammalian tissues.

This course will enable students to gain an understanding of the fundamentals of organic and inorganic chemistry in relevance to the drug compounds. These concepts provide a deep understanding of organic and inorganic molecules' classification, nomenclature, preparation, reactivity, and properties. Furthermore, this course also gives an insight into volumetric analysis for identification and purity determination of pharmaceutical compounds specified in official compendia.

This English Language course assumes an advanced level of general language proficiency. It emphasizes skills required for students’ professional purposes, including knowledge of specific names and symptoms of diseases and vocabulary related to the pharmaceutical field. The course also provides practice in the skills of speaking, listening, and reading. This involves exposure to medical literature so that students understand active ingredients, indications, dosage, side effects and contra indications. Teaching and assessment of this course will be done on-campus.

Semester 1

The student will be able to apply the knowledge and skills to provide the required pharmaceutical care for patients with Cardio-vascular diseases, Endocrine disorders, CNS diseases, and pain management.

This course will provide an integrated view of the physiology of hormonal systems and the pharmacological approaches used in the management of their related disorders. This course will also cover the pharmacology of drugs used in the treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders as well as anaesthetics and opioid analgesics using a combination of theory lectures, computer-based simulations and case studies

This course teaches the students an introduction to sterile compounding standards and requirements for preparation of personnel and the environment to ensure safe quality sterile preparations, free from microbial contamination in a pharmacy, with emphasis on the basic principles of infection control. The learner will be familiarized with the basic principles of proper aseptic techniques in the preparation of sterile products. Students will learn and demonstrate basic aseptic manipulations with an emphasis on performing and verifying accurate checks and calculations for parenteral medications. Sterile products may include intravenous admixtures, total parenteral nutrition, eye preparations and irrigation solutions.

This course introduces the students to the types, classification and characteristics of various microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa. In addition, it will provide the microbiological standards of medicines and pharmaceutical products with types of contaminations and methods of sterilisation in pharmaceutical manufacturing. The course will further build the student’s practical skills of sterilisation, disinfection, antiseptic techniques, microscopic examination, preparation of culture media as well as bioburdens techniques and procedures.

This course will provide students with the basic principles of the Omani pharmacy laws, code of ethics and regulations. The course will offer students case studies and different scenarios to apply these principles in a realistic professional setting, such as resolving illegal, unethical and unprofessional incidents in pharmacy practice as well as practicing inter-professional relations and collaborations.

This course is offered to students in the Diploma level. The course aims at enabling the students to communicate effectively and appropriately, based on real-life and workplace situations. The course equips the students with the necessary language and contextual knowledge. The students will be engaged in tasks where they demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills to solve life and workplace related problems.

This course is an introduction to the basics of accounting concepts and selected accounting practices for pharmacy undergraduate students. The course provides to gain basic knowledge of accounting to manage merchandising operations in the pharmacy business.

Semester 2

The students will be able to review and solve different case studies (samples of prescriptions) in a simulated professional work environment. They will practice dose calculations, patient counselling and dispensing of medications under the supervision of the in-charge pharmacist for prescriptions related to: Gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular system, respiratory system, central nervous system, endocrine system, infectious diseases, musculoskeletal system, nutrition and vitamins, skin, eye, ear, nose and throat.

This course will cover the pharmacology of antimicrobial drugs and cancer chemotherapeutic agents as well as the pharmacological management of common dermatological, ophthalmic, nose, mouth, throat and ear disorders. Emphasis will be on linking the pharmacological properties of drugs to explain their indications, adverse reactions and contraindications using a combination of theory lectures, case studies and problem-based learning.

Pharmaceutical Quality control and Quality assurance course cover the essential requirements of the basic terminology and techniques adopted to determine the quality of various dosage forms. This course will enable students to learn the quality assurance methodologies to assure the delivery of quality products and services through a systematic approach. The role of regulatory affairs in the pharmaceutical industry in sustaining performance and meeting objectives is emphasised.

This is an introductory course to public health for pharmacy students which will promote the role of pharmacy profession in health education and patient care. The course will familiarise students to epidemiology, risk and prevalence of communicable and non-communicable diseases. It will also develop the students’ knowledge and awareness of public health campaigns, programs and pharmacy services during emergencies. Students will actively participate in health promotion initiatives in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the private pharmacy sector.

The course goal is to deliver an understanding of the elementary concepts in probability theory and statistical analysis. Students will learn the essential theory of distribution of random variables, the basic theory and techniques of parameter estimation, and tests of hypotheses. After taking this course, students will be able to use calculators and tables to perform simple statistical analyses for small samples; and to use a statistical package in performing analyses for small and large samples.
