Sumo Competition 2025 at Sultan Qaboos University

Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) hosted the Annual Sumo Competition 2025 on March 4.  Sumo competition is a popular type of robotics and engineering competition in which two robots attempt to push each other out of a circular arena, the concept of this robotics event was designed in a similar fashion to the sport of Sumo Wrestling, the national sport of Japan.

A selection process for the competition was based on the best design and concept of the sumo robot, followed by an elimination process before the competition in March 4, 2025. A total of 60 teams from various colleges and universities across the Sultanate have registered for the competition, 20 teams were selected and advanced to the semi-final round, including our team, UTAS-Ibra Sumo Team.  The semi-final competition was held on March 3, 2025. Our team competed against 5 teams and won which qualified them for the final round competition held the next day.  The final round was an epic battle between UTAS Ibra and SQU and we grabbed 3rd place.

A huge congratulations to our SUMO team for bagging the 3rd place overall.

The UTAS-Ibra Sumo Team is composed of the following students:

  1. Mr. Faisal Saoud Ahmed Al-Battashi
  2. Mr. Omar Hamood Ahmed Al-Batrani and
  3. Mr. Sulaiman Saif Aamir Al-Jahdhami

Under the mentorship of Mr. Donnie Solano. 

The robotics teams would like to extend their appreciation to all those who supported them that led to this great achievement, especially to Dr. Sami – HoD, Dr. Shamganth – HoS (Electrical), Dr. Saravanan – HoS (Mechanical), Mr. Michael, Ms. Thamna, Ms. Asma, and Mr. Vidhu, and Mr. Donato.
