Advanced Diploma of Technology in Civil Engineering

 

Provide high quality education and training in the field of Civil Engineering that will further enhance the student's knowledge, creativity and technical skills and enable him/her to communicate effectively, to be technically competent, and to deliver solutions for Civil Engineering problems. The program also enables the graduate to function in inter-disciplinary areas of Civil Engineering, ethical practices and increase their employability skills to suite the current market situation.

 

 

The graduate should have the ability to:

  1. Apply the knowledge of Mathematics, Science and Engineering fundamentals for development of Civil Engineering models.  
  2. Identify, formulate and solve Civil Engineering problems, with the help of literatures, principles of mathematics and engineering sciences.
  3. Apply the knowledge of Engineering materials, methods of construction, theory of structures, and design of concrete and steel structures, to gain a strong background in the area of Civil engineering.
  4. Work individually or collaboratively as part of a team and use substantial technical skills appropriate to his/her knowledge and skills gained.
  5. Work in multi-disciplinary sustainable projects for the benefit of the society with professional ethics.
  6. Develop creativity and critical thinking skills in construction practices and apply professionalism in societal, economic, environmental and global context.
  7. Recognize the need-for and engage in life-long learning.

 

Allotment to the Mechanical Engineering specialization is based on the CGPA scored by the student in First Year Diploma. Requirements to progress to Advanced Diploma in Civil Engineering:

  •   Student must complete Diploma in Civil Engineering successfully with CGPA ≥ 2.5 in scale of 4.
  •   IELTS band Score ≥4.5 or the FDL Mark should be ≥ 64 (Reference: 1. MoMP Bylaws of College of Technology & its Amendments).

Semester 1

 

The course aims to provide the underpinning knowledge in Engineering Drawing and enable the students to produce high quality engineering drawing using manual and computer aided drafting techniques.

The course aims to provide the fundamental underpinning knowledge in Physics mainly related to the topics on measurements, motion, energy, power, optics and sound.

The course aims to introduce the students to the basic concepts of engineering chemistry which form an integral part of those majoring in Engineering and an essential background for those majoring in other disciplines

The course aims to equip the graduates with problem solving, programming skills and to apply real time programming approaches in all engineering disciplines through any latest computer programming languages like python.

The course aims to provide an understanding and awareness of workplace hazards, risks and industrial safety and to impart necessary skills and competence.

The course aims to equip and enhance the students with hands on structured experience on basic engineering practices adhering to safety regulations.

The course aims to provide the fundamental underpinning knowledge in Physics mainly related to the topics on electricity, electromagnetism, heat, thermodynamics and modern physics.

The course aims to introduce students to renewable energy resources: availability, potential and suitability as a substitute for conventional energy resources for future energy demands.

The course aims to highlight the concepts of force systems, particle / rigid body equilibrium, stress and strain due to various loading conditions and analysis of simple structures subjected to different loading conditions.

The course aims to provide an introductory overview of the various materials used in the construction industry. Students have the opportunity to understand and experience material capacity and its behavior through demonstrations in the laboratories. This course also provides an understanding of the applications of materials commonly used in construction with their properties, merits, and limitations.

The course aims to enable the student to understand the building standards regulating construction in the region and produce working drawings for buildings and building works through (Automatic Computer Aided Designing Tools).

The course aims to impart the knowledge about the principles of surveying, use a range of survey equipment in the field to measure and prepare the required data for civil engineering works.

The course aims to equip the students with an understanding of primary mechanisms of behavior and the basic criteria for design of simply reinforced concrete structure to enable him/her to present the final design for reinforcement concrete structural element like slab, beam, columns and footing.

The course aims to develop in student a deeper understanding and greater proficiency in structural analysis. Emphasis will be placed on understanding different methods of analysis that are applicable to both simple and complex structures.

The course aims to explore the science of additive materials used in concrete and evaluate their use in making special concretes.

This course offers the opportunity to apply the knowledge learnt in Diploma Level and enables the students to find a solution to a problem related to civil engineering. Assessment is by means of demonstration of work before the panelists and submission of project report. Projects are undertaken in a small group (4 students per group maximum) with diverse range of topics in civil engineering.

Semester 1

Prerequisite: PHYS1110
The course aims to introduce the properties and behaviour of fluids for civil and environmental engineering applications. The fundamental principles of fluid statics condition, kinematics concepts, continuity equations, Bernoulli’s applications are introduced in the course. The course provides essential knowledge for the study of flow behaviour which in turn helps to design the hydraulic structures and environmental projects.

The course aims to enable the student to produce working drawings for different types of civil engineering structures through (Automatic Computer Aided Designing Tools), and provide a basic overview of the technologies and workflows that engineer can use to digitize the Built Environment in the context of (Building Information Modelling).

The course aims to demonstrate the concepts of building drawings and specifications; types and function of cost estimation; conceptual cost estimates; quantity take-off of different items; cost of materials, labor and equipment; overhead and other markup costs; and analysis of rates.

The course aims to introduce the students to advanced methods of analysis like strain energy methods, Influence lines, Plastic analysis and its applications, matrix methods to solve redundant structures.

The course aims to introduce to the students the behavior and design of structural steel members such as trusses, beams, columns and frames, and to gain a comprehensive experience in the design of simple steel structures.

The course aims to impart the fundamental concepts to the study of soil, its behavior and application as an engineering material.

The course aims to introduce the theoretical and practical concepts of water and wastewater treatment using a comprehensive and intensive approach while maintaining an engineering perspective. Enable students to correlate different concepts of design water and wastewater treatment plants respecting the followed standard procedure and real practice. To familiarize real world engineering examples to students to picturize how the different treatment technologies of water and wastewater are applied in engineering practices.
